Oil giant Total is facing a payout of about ￡750 million after it was found liable for the December 2005 explosion that ripped through the Buncef ield oil depot in Hertfordshire. The judgment of the Commercial Court on 18 March ends legal wrangling over who was responsible and to what extent they were liable. Total UK argued it was not directly liable for the disaster. It claimed that Hertfordshire Oil Storage Limited (HOSL), in which it had a majority stake, was answerable as the site's owner. The court rejected the argument because Total ran the terminal and employed all staff.
