Only Wales likely to meet 2020 recycling and reuse target

The latest local authority waste statistics show that the improvement in recycling is slowing. All of the UK bar Wales is unlikely to meet the EU target. Wales is the only part of the UK likely to meet EU Waste Framework Directive target of recycling, reusing or composting half of household waste by 2020. In fact, it already meets it. But in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland annual improvement rates are continuing to decline. If current trends continue, it is unlikely that they will meet the target (see figure, p20).
