A THIRD OF THE UK'S COAL FLEET IS ON THE WAY OUT

Two-gigawatt coal-fired Ferrybridge C station in West Yorkshire announced it would close in May to avoid rising compliance costs and growing competition from renewables - it was forecast to lose an estimated £100m over the next five years. Ferrybridge had applied for a one-year capacity market contract but was not awarded one for 2018. The plant's power generation and emissions have halved since a serious fire in 2014 which led to the closure of two of its four 500-megawatt generating sets. The station did not run this past summer and only 0.5 gigawatts is expected to run over the winter.
