WEEE fees to boost council waste schemes

The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) has set up a £775,000 fund for local councils to boost collection, reuse and recycling rates of unwanted electrical goods. Some £375,000 is allocated from the 2014 Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Compliance Fee Fund and the remainder is from the Distributor Takeback Scheme (DTS). The government's compliance fee is based on a methodology whereby producer compliance schemes can opt to pay if they fail to reach their annual WEEE obligations. The system was used for the first time in relation to the 2014 compliance year and the fee was settled by the end of March.
