A project to build a large offshore wind farm off the Dorset coast has been stymied after DECC denied it planning consent. The controversial Navitus Bay project was set to supply up to 970 megawatts of renewable power to the grid. It was backed by Eneco and EDF and would have used 121 8MW turbines from Vestas. The decision, announced by energy minister Lord Bourne on 11 September, followed the Planning Inspectorate's recommendation that it should be refused. This was largely due to its visual impact on the Jurassic Coast, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The Planning Inspectorate said there would also be a residual significant adverse impact on the qualities underpinning Dorset and Isle of Wight areas of natural beauty.
