The export of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) has increased exponentially over the past five years from being almost nonexistent before 2010 (see figure 1). More than 2.6 million tonnes of the material - essentially shredded, dehydrated and baled residual waste -were shipped from UK shores in 2014. The figure is 39% more than in 2013 and about 173 times 2010's volumes. Northern Ireland experienced the fastest growth between 2013 and 2014, with tonnages increasing almost fourfold. Scotland followed, with an 86% increase year on year.
