Taxpayers pick up the tab

The Environment Agency (EA) has spent almost £2m of taxpayer money to clear abandoned waste sites in the UK over the past two and a half years, ENDS can reveal. The regulator forked out £1,989,000 since August 2014, partially clearing just four non-compliant sites. It said these are cases where it intervened "as a last resort" because it was unable to recoup clean-up costs from the operators or landowners.
