A Sustainability was a fringe issue in the early 1990s with few professionals working outside mainstream building services. The ozone hole was a major concern but global warming was not widely discussed. Recycling was something 'hippies' did and the term 'circular economy' had not been coined. Energy consultants surveyed organisations to help them make savings but the solutions available were more basic. 'The lowest price wins' was the main rule in procurement so life-cycle analysis was rarely undertaken. This meant there was no drive to buy the most energy-efficient equipment.
