In February it was revealed that three victims of what has been described as the "largest-ever modern slavery ring uncovered in the UK" were seeking compensation against waste giant Biffa for failing to identify the problem. The victims were trafficked from Poland to the Midlands by a criminal gang and were forced to work sorting rubbish for Biffa via a recruitment firm in 2015 and 2016. They lived in squalid conditions and were forced to work for as little as £10 a week. Police began investigating in February 2015, after two victims escaped their captors and it emerged the gang had trafficked more than 400 Polish individuals.
