The dangers of Willetts's new Toryism

Just as the Tories seemed determined to reclaim their title as Britain's stupid party, along comes David Willetts's "Blair's Gurus" (Centre for Policy Studies, £7.50). Mr Willetts, a junior minister in the cabinet office, is at 40 so much the coming man that John Major managed to overcome his habitual insecurity in the presence of brains to promote him. After the demeaning inanities of the Tory launch of their "New Labour, New Danger" campaign last week it comes as a breath of fresh air. It reflects Mr Willetts's growing status that Tory Central Office is distributing his pamphlet to many thousands of Tory activists.
