We've been preaching the importance of positive public relations for years, prodding canmakers to promote the safe harbour that their containers provide for beverages, fruit and vegetables, meats and dozens of other goods. Food safety has long been the guiding principle in the US, Europe and other markets where consumers can pick and choose their products. It's becoming more of a priority, though, in many emerging markets where shoppers have become more savvy about their selections. Once you put the product in a can, consumers have the confidence that it's safe. When I pluck that can from the shelf, I can tell if it's been penetrated or has a poor seal - but I can't always say the same about other packagings.
