As of late 2020, the status of RON and closings remained in flux, notwithstanding the widespread adoption of RON in most states, but one thing seemed certain: The pandemic likely will continue to accelerate the adoption and acceptance of electronic and remote practices even though the remote closing process remains in its formative years. In November 2019, ALTA reported that just 17 percent of its members had "conducted some variation of a digital closing." By May 2020, nearly 40 percent of ALTA members were offering remote closing services.Among agents who have the legal and functional capability to remotely notarize, they were using such remote practices in 22 percent of closings as of April 2020. These trends seem likely to continue as states adopt regulations supporting RON.
