Jim McAlpine

Scottish Region secretary Jim McAlpine passed away on 25 March 2020.Jim,from Bo'ness on the River Forth,was educated at Bo'ness Primary School and Bo'ness Academy. In 1951, he started a motor engineering apprenticeship with Ford agent Millar and McGregor, Grangemouth. He studied at the local technical college and soon after this was completed, he was called up for National Service with the Royal Air Force. He was stationed at RAF Bicester Motor Transport, often on standby as duty driver. He used to say that it was just as well that before going into the service, he knew how to double declutch on the old Albions that were still around. Following his service, after a period working at successive companies as a mechanical plant and depot engineer, he returned to Ford at Millar, Linlithgow. In 1966, he became a staff engineer at General Accident - initially operating in the west of Scotland before moving to the Edinburgh branch for the remainder of his career, retiring in 1992.
