The £260M, 1.5km New Tyne Crossing connects Jarrow, on the south bank of the Tyne, with East Howden to the north.rnIt comprises a new 400m immersed tube tunnel and a major refurbishment of the 1960s built Tyne Tunnel to provide two traffic lanes in each direction and a threefold increase in capacity. The immersed tube tunnel option was chosen after consideration of navigational requirements, community issues and cost.
