What has become the most critical built environment debate of the year has been reignited with the announcement of the emerging favourites in the London airport race. Foster's initial proposal for a major airport, rail and energy hub in the Thames estuary, now backed by London mayor Boris Johnson, sparked a wave of creative thinking and masterplanning among architects. Not for decades has the practice of architecture become so passionately interlinked in the positive challenge of planning for the future - with ideas enthusiastically received by government.
