Asif Khan in shock shortlisting for Helsinki Guggenheim museum competition

Emerging star Asif Khan's 10-strong practice is the only UK firm on the shortlist of six competing to design Helsinki's new Guggenheim museum. The design contest, organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants for the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, is the most popular ever after attracting 1,715 submissions from nearly 80 countries. Until Helsinki, the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza contest, won by Heneghan Peng, was the biggest, with 1,557 submissions. Khan (pictured, bearing the 2012 Olympic torch), is again collaborating with engineers AKTII, having worked with them on the headline-grabbing Coca-Cola Beatbox pavilion at the London 2012 Olympics and the MegaFaces pavilion at this year's Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The team lines up for the £100 million job against a diverse list of up-and-coming practices from around the globe (see page 10 for shortlist and designs).
