Q In a nutshell, describe your practice A Assemble is a non-hierarchical and collectively organised architecture and design practice interested in developing work collaboratively with others. We work across a wide range of projects - primarily design, construction, organisation, advocacy, education and communication. We also develop business plans and strategies, sometimes setting up organisations to make sure projects continue beyond the design stage. Q What do you do that is different from more mainstream practice? A Making is at the centre of our practice. We have a large-scale workshop, shared with a number of other carpenters and makers, which allows us to self-build elements of our designs and work with people in a collaborative, hands-on way. A large number of Assemble members do not have a background in architecture, so we have a lot of other types of skills that we can bring to projects, which in turn expands the type of work we can do.
