How did this project first come about? The small church and community centre of St John on the Elsinge estate was built in the 1950s to serve the new housing estate. It had flourished and did extensive youth work. But over the years its congregation had dwindled, while the premises was rented out to other groups, including a pre-school, youth organisations, an art class and a choir. A quinquennial inspection of the property found that it needed repairs, mainly to the roof, estimated at£140,000. At that time the church's membership totalled 11 and its financial reserves totalled £12,000.
