In 1789 the Bishop of Salisbury ordered JamesnWyatt to bring his cathedral into line withnlate eighteenth-century tastes and liturgicalnneeds. Wyatt’s activities in the eastern arm –ncontroversial then and now – included removingnscreens, destroying stained-glass windows andnwhitewashing the medieval vault paintings.nArguably, the paintings got the best of it,nwhitewash being – in some hands at least – morenor less reversible. They were also the subject of anremarkably systematic survey by the draughts-nman Jacob Schnebbelie, engaged by RichardnGough, then Director of this Society. In his newnbook, Matthew Reeve pays tribute to the sig-nnificance of Gough – pioneering in his thinkingnabout building conservation – and Schnebbelie,nwhose work is sound enough to allow recon-nstruction of the iconographic programme and,nin Reeve’s view, analysis of its style.
