The opening chapters of this important booknare devoted to attitudes to tomb monumentsnunder the Tudors, and the antiquarian studies –noften originating in concerns about the erasurenof heraldry – to which assaults on monumentsngave rise, renewed destruction in the seven-nteenth century, and the efforts of contemporarynhistorians and travellers to record what was inndanger of being lost. They are followed by threenexcellent studies of aspects of the impact ofnearly modern destruction on monuments: thentomb of King Arthur at Glastonbury, the Percyntomb in Beverley Minster and the Herbertnmonuments at Abergavenny. In each case Phil-nlip Lindley shows the original form of thesenmonuments or assemblages of monuments andncorrects the ways in which assumptions aboutnthe damage have lead to misreadings of them.
