The Atlantic Branch of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences began functioning on Sep 1, 1958. At the present time, the Branch includes the Department of Experimental Hydrophysical Research and five laboratories, namely, those of the geology of the Atlantic Ocean, geoecology, marine meteorology, coastal systems, and marine ecology.
