The structure and properties of disc-ring yarns made from five commercial 80/20 woolylon blends are compared with conventional woolen ring spun yarns of the same blends and equivalent yarn counts. Blends with the highest percentage of coarse wool fibers produce disc-ring yarns with tensile properties similar to the woolen ring spun yarns, but the former have better evenness properties. Tracer fiber studies reveal that the structure of disc-ring yarns consists of a disordered arrangement of the constituent fibers. Analysis of the yarn cross section shows that with the disc-ring yarn, fiber packing density increases from the center to the outer zone of the yarn. The woolen ring-spun yarn shows the converse tendency. In general, disc-ring yarns are more bulky than woolen ring spun yarns.
