DENIM is almost as synonymous with the USA as the Stars and Stripes, but despite a resurgence in the fashionability of denim, traditional manufacturers there have not had the easiest of times in recent years. In April last year, for instance, Levi Strauss announced it would close six of its US manufacturing plants as part of a previously announced shift away from owned-and-operated manufacturing. This continues the change it began in 1999 to focus more on being a marketing and product-driven organisation.
