Total world fibre production (both MMF and natural fibres) achieved an unprecedented level in 2004, exceeding 67 million tonnes, according to Swiss textile machinery builder Saurer. This corresponds to a global 6.7% increase compared to 2003, clearly above the average long-term growth rate. Put another way, this means that 2,100 kg of fibre is processed into yarns and nonwovens every second, and that the average annual consumption of fibres in Switzerland is met with just over a day's global production. To satisfy textile needs in China, a notional period of about two months of production was necessary.
