In spun yarns, yarn evenness is inevitable due to the fundamental nature of the fibres, how they are manufactured and their arrangement in the yarn. In respect of filament yarns, however, granulate heterogeneity, spinning process irregularity and faults in subsequent yarn cooling and winding operations, as well as machine defects and drafting faults, can quickly lead to mass variations. Because filament yarns are produced at very high speeds, these defects can affect thousands of metres of material. Such variations also often cause difficulties in the subsequent processes of draw-twisting, texturing or dyeing and reduce yarn quality. Consequently, comprehensive evenness testing is a must for a quality control system. Uster Technologies has been manufacturing textile testing systems for measuring filament yarns since 1955. The Tester 5-C800 for filament yarns was introduced in 2005 and allows the quality characteristics of filament yarns to be quickly assessed. The results can also be used to judge the consequences on subsequent processes.
