John Heathcoat's Time Machine

We can't let 2008 pass without mentioning the 200th anniversary of John Heathcoat's bobbinet machine. The forerunner of bobbinet tulle was lace, which was produced from thin threads with needles or bobbins. Intertwining and knotting was known earlier, but it wasn't until around round 1500, that lace started to be produced based on a net ground. It was in the French town of Tulle that instead of being knotted, lace was first made on net grounds - from then on named after the town -but these had to be time-consumingly produced by hand.
