The race towards a circular economy has gripped industries across continents, but despite a united goal, approaches are plentiful, competitive and oppositional. In the US and Canada, copious start-up companies with 'sustainable concerns' rival one another, edging closer and closer to the finish line. But, elsewhere, in European textile conferences such as the Textile ETP (European Technology Platform for the Future of Textiles and Clothing), predictions on the viability of such a fragmented model are not so hopeful. Although the Textile ETP anticipates great strides towards a circular economy in the next several years, driven both by changing consumer behaviour and regulation, it also notes that cooperation with 'essential stakeholders' is vital for the formation of an authoritative organisation, and since fragmented companies dominate the global value chain, the circular economy may remain out of reach, with no commander to lead the way.
