The Ashmolean Museum's temporary exhibition space, high above the busy Atrium, was a fittingly tranquil venue for this impressive display of Japanese textiles of the Meiji period (1868-1912). Curator Clare Pollard's enthusiastic and absorbing talk further illuminated objects so fine that they are sometimes hard for a modern audience to comprehend. Threads of Silk and Gold explored the extraordinary flowering of Japanese silk painting and embroidery in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, its astounding ability to capture realistic detail and its sometimes surprising manifestations and influences (Fig. I). Japanese interactions with Western culture and the impacts of technical developments, like chemical dyes, mechanisation and photography, were also highlighted.
