Hooked Rugs: Encounters in American Modern Art, Craft and Design

In this book Cynthia Fowler weaves the hooked rug into discourses of inter-war US modernism. With particular focus on the designers Ralph Pearson and the husband-wife pairing of Zoltan and Rosa Hecht, Fowler describes how a vernacular craft, with early nineteenth-century roots, is wrested from 'tradition' through its promotion as an integral part of the inter-war modern interior. This was the first time I had heard of the modernist hooked rug - heavy wool rugs with geometric patterns and bold blocks of colour that immediately bring to mind Bau-haus abstraction.
