NATURAL INSTINCTS The work of Julie Ryder

During the late 1980s, I retrained as a textile designer, graduating from the Melbourne College of Textiles in 1990, where I majored in design for printed textiles. I worked as the print assistant for a group of designer/makers for several years and I taught textile surface design at the MCT and Box Hill TAFE. I also started my own business printing fabrics for homewares, fashion and interiors in my studio in Collingwood and the Meat Market Craft Centre in North Melbourne. To this day, designing and hand-printing product for sale enables me to fund the artistic side of my practice, where research and experimentation with new materials can take up to two years before a body of work is resolved, produced and exhibited.
