This paper introduces the concept of TFS ring spinning, which employs the use of a modification device attached to a conventional ring frame. The modification device allows yams with reduced residual torque to be produced without the need of an additional step after the spinning process. The experimental results indicate that the modified yarn can achieve up to 38% reduction in spirality of a circular knit fabric as against its ring-spun counterpart. The main drawback of this method is the reduction of yarn tenacity and subsequently the fabric bursting strengths. This spinning system however has yet to be fully researched. Further study is currently being conducted to improve and optimise the system in order to meet industrial requirements. We shall also explore the potential of the spinning system from short to long staple fibres and from natural to synthetic materials. Initial trials have also shown that the modified yarns can improve skewness in woven fabrics, also the fabric appearance. It is therefore envisaged that this modification system will have significant commercial potential.
