ITMA '03 Survey 14: Weaving preparation, warping and sizing

Warp sizing is a very important process in weaving preparation. Its purpose is to apply a protective coating to the yarn to enable it to withstand the complex stresses to which it is subjected in the weaving machine, while maintaining or enhancing its strength and elasticity. Weaving mills and finishing plants consider warp sizing from entirely different viewpoints. Maximum weaving efficiency is paramount to the weaving mill. Modifications in sizing practices and size formulations are made with extreme caution to ensure that weaving efficiency is not affected. Finishing plants are concerned with complete removal of sizes and wastewater treatments, so that subsequent processing can be done successfully. The sizing department has not escaped the attention of the ecologists and conservationists. Effluent treatment becomes an expensive headache for textile machine designers and mill operators.
