Fashion clothing supply chain management, Britain to China

Three types of International Fashion Clothing Supply Chain Management Model are identified. The Streamlined Model represents a possible future for supply chains with Chinese manufacturers. The clothing industry is an important and labour intensive industry throughout the developing world in terms of the wealth produced by garment production having largely moved from developed countries because of labour costs. For example, Godly (1995) stated, "Employment peaked before the First World War at well over 800,000 making the garment trades one of the single most important sources of employment in Britain. Jones (2000) concluded that the prospects for production and employment within the UK appear to be extremely poor. Jones and Hayes (2004) also conclude that, "the production of clothing and the associated level of employment in the UK have been in long-term decline. A rapid collapse of employment has taken place since the mid-1990s"; only 49,700 employees were employed in the clothing industry in October 2004.
