The US commerce secretary, Carlos Gutierrez, and trade representative, Susan C. Schwab, met recently with Baltimore port leaders and business people to tout the importance of exports and jobs to Baltimore and the US.rnDescribing the port as an engine that drives growth in Baltimore, Maryland and the whole country, Mr Gutierrez pointed out that over 128,000 jobs involving $2.4 billion in wages and salaries are linked to the port. Maryland's overall exports shipments of merchandise in 2006 amounted to $7.6 billion, up 70% from the 2002 total of $4.5 billion.
