The VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland has developed a process for recycling paper and cardboard as raw material for nonwovens. The principal raw material now used in nonwovens for making diapers and similar wear is biologically non-degradable polyester; and an estimated 10,000 tons of such diapers and sanitary towels are disposed into landfills each year contributing to environmental degradation. An eco-friendly alternative, bio-based nonwovens derived from wood, has not made much headway due to prohibitive production cost. Thus, the process that VTT has developed for recycling biodegradable paper and cardboard for making nonwovens for hygiene and home care products paves an eco-friendly path. Apart from hygiene, health and cleaning products, the nonwovens are used also in the construction industry.
