This response to Danielle Sears Vignes' “Hang It Out To Dry” utilizes the idiom of hauntology to explore the self as other within the context of performance criticism. Utilizing theories of both absence and presence, I trace the specter of Vignes' performance to articulate the way in which she bears witness to Hurricane Katrina's aftermath. I argue that Vignes' performance provides an uncanny relay for her audience, one that forces their own negotiation of subjectivity in light of communal catastrophe.
