BAT FAUNA OF CENTRAL LOUISIANA FORESTS

Records of 206 bats that were either mist-netted or hand-netted during 1995 and 1996 in forested regions of central Louisiana were compared to historical accounts of bat populations in this area. Nycticeius humeralis, Lasiurus seminolus and L. borealis were mist-netted in large numbers, while Myotis austroriparious, Eptesicus fuscus and Pipistrellus subflavus were captured in low numbers. The relative frequencies of capture were consistent with historical documentation. Hand-netting at roost sites was far more successful than mist-netting in the collection of specimens of Corynorhinus rafinesquii. Specimens of L. seminolus, L. borealis, M. austroriparious and C. rafinesquii were captured in various Louisiana parishes and Kisatchie National Forest ranger districts where the species were previously unreported. Survey data represents an important aspect of monitoring bat population trends in central Louisiana.
