BOTHRIOCEPHALUS RARUS (CESTOIDEA: PSEUDOPHYLLIDEA) FROM THE DWARF SALAMANDER, EURYCEA QUADRIDIGITATA (AMPHIBIA: CAUDATA), IN SOUTHERN ARKANSAS, WITH A REVIEW OF THIS TAPEWORM SPECIES IN OTHER SALAMANDER HOSTS

It is noteworthy to mention two other members of the genus Bothriocephalus that have been previously reported to infect salamanders, namely B. euryciensis from the dark-sided salamander, Eurycea longicauda melanopleura in Adair County, Oklahoma (Schaefer & Self 1978), and B. typhlotritonis from the grotto salamander, Typhlotrition spelaeus in Mayes County, Oklahoma (Reeves 1949). Although E. longicaudata melanopleura and E. lucijuga has been reported as hosts of B. rarus (see Table 1), B. euryciensis has not been reported in any salamander taxon since its original description. However, Saltarelli (1977), in an unpublished thesis, reported B. typhlotritonis from E. longicaudata melanopleura and E. lucijuga from two cave systems in northwestern Arkansas. Unfortunately, no voucher specimens were deposited and the specimens may be lost (Saltarelli, pers. comm.). Additional comparative studies will be necessary to determine whether either species is conspecific with B. rarus.
