Beyond the Westphalian rainbow: a dissident theory of supranational systems. Territory, Politics, Governance. This article focuses on the work of Adam Watson from the English School of International Relations for two purposes. The first is to highlight the potential it contains for transcending the prejudices imposed upon international relations theory by the anarchy assumption and by the reification of independent statehood. The second and the more specific purpose is to understand the formation of legitimate supranational systems once these prejudices are removed. Watson approaches supranationalism as an extant condition in international society rather than as a deviation from a normal condition of anarchy or independent statehood, and proposes a culturalist and a moralistic framework in which supranational systems can be legitimized. As a case study to determine which framework is more valid, I analysed the convention on the future of Europe and concluded that the moralistic serves better for understanding how the European Union is legitimized. Once juxtaposed with Neo-Weberian historical sociology's insights into the state, Watson's moralistic framework can offer a foundational theory for reconsidering legitimate supranational systems and open up new research agendas in international relations theory.%Au-delà de l'arc-en-ciel westphalien: une théorie dissidente de systèmes supranationaux. Cet article est axé sur le travail d'Adam Watson, de l'école anglaise de relations internationales (English School of International Relations), et ceci pour deux raisons. La première est la mise en lumière de son potentiel pour transcender les préjudices imposés à la théorie des relations internationales par l'hypothèse de l'anarchie et par la réification de l'état indépendant. La deuxième, qui suit un objectif plus spécifique, est la connaissance de la formation de systèmes supranationaux légitimes lors de la suppression de ces préjudices. Watson approche le supranationalisme comme une condition existante dans la société internationale, plutôt que comme déviation d'une condition normale de l'anarchie ou de l'état indépendant, et propose un cadre culturaliste et moraliste dans lequel des systèmes supranationaux peuvent être légitimés. En tant qu'étude de cas, s'efforçant d'établir lequel des cadres est le plus valable, j'ai analysé la Convention sur l'avenir de l'Europe, et conclu que le cadre moraliste est plus utile pour comprendre de quelle façon l'Union européenne est légitimée. Lorsqu'il est juxtaposé avec les connaissances de sociologie néo-wébériennes concernant l'état, le cadre moraliste de Watson peut apporter une théorie fondamentale pour reconsidérer des systèmes supranationaux légitimes, et ouvrir la voie pour de nouveaux programmes de recherche sur la théorie des relations internationales.
