To begin with it felt like a complete cheat because it is a completely different craft. When I started in tv I'd tend to overwrite massively, I would say the same thing three times because I wasn't sure if people would get it. I had a lot of heartache trying to condense an hour-and-a-half's stage play into a 45 minute tv drama. I thought nobody would get it — it would be so boring and there would be no texture and character. I didn't think that you could create a scene which said everything without any dialogue. I resisted being visual with my storytelling. I thought that the words were what earned you the right to be doing it in the first place.
