UMTS - The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System

The process of designing UMTS is a lengthy one, as could be expected from the still ongoing GSM standardisation work. Technological barriers will have to be overcome, new alliances sought and numerous compromises reached before UMTS will become a reality. However, if the standardisation effort is successful, a new system fulfilling most telecommu- nication needs in the global mobile telecommunications market place of tomorrow looks set to emerge. Already the contours of a global third generation system with the potential to change communications patterns all over the world can be seen.
