摘要

Automatic management of congestion is an essential feature for proper operation of Digital Switching Systems (DSSs) in a public telephone network. In the first generation digital switching system called E-10B, the operating units have faced an acute congestion problem. Whenever the demand placed on the internal resources of the E-10B switching system exceeds it's capacity, because of lack of admission control mechanism, the system goes into an internal deadlock situation and it's capacity to handle calls is drastically reduced. In this article, an attempt has been made to analyze the problem with a view to identify the point of bottleneck. The outline of a software patch which has been recently designed in the E-10B Software Centre of the TEC, New Delhi, has been presented as a possible solution. The article also contains certain recommendations regarding traffic engineering of digital switching systems.
