COPPER OPTICS

By enabling pristine signal transmission over existing copper cable at speeds up to 2 mbps, copper optics can leverage the huge investments in copper plants world-wide. The advent of optical fibre based "Broadband networks" is responsible for reluctance to install more copper cable in telecom local access networks. In this environment, electronic devices, which convey multiple telephony channels over each existing copper pair, provide a cost effective and flexible solution to expanding customer needs. HDSL is an innovation that bridges the gap between copper cable and fibre optics via a process termed copper optics. Author discusses how HDSL technology offers an immediate solution for the introduction of broadband services using existing local loop, a copper based infrastructure.
