This project aims at developing a Web enabled console to monitor critical data in Switch Mode Power Supplies and backup power supplies so that preventive maintenance can be taken before the actual failure. This improves system reliability and reduces maintenance costs as telephone exchange power plants can be remotely monitored. SMPS and backup power supplies (Battery Banks and Generators) are an important component of Telephone Exchanges. Sensors are used to measure critical parameters of these equipments. The Battery Bank voltage, current and temperature, SMPS output voltage and current, Generator output voltage, current and diesel level are some of the parameters measured. Renesas R8C13 microcontroller with an inbuilt ADC is used to read this data and send this processed data to a personal computer through a RS232 link. In the personal computer, the data is read by a Java class from the serial port and saved in XML 1.0 (Extensible Markup Language) format. Reports are generated using the Java based Apache Tomcat 5.5 Web Server; hence all the reports are web enabled. Alerts are generated on the Web Server hence; the reliability of power plant is improved. A new technique using XML and JSTL for ease of coding, readability and internationalization has been implemented. Implementation of such a system with test results for different test cases using actual sensor and simulated data has been documented.
