The market demand for cable modems and supporting equipment is on the rise in the United States and elsewhere, as Internet users look to cable over DSL for access solutions. By 2007, it will be a $16.4 billion a year market. It is not surprising, then, that the push for interoperability and industry standards would also be on the rise, as manufacturers race to offer newer and better equipment that meshes with the technology required by cable Internet providers. CableLabs has been an innovator in defining interface standards that have led the way to creating compatible data communications service offerings that allow consumers a choice in the cable modem they use, instead of having to rely on the one provided by their cable provider. As a result, manufacturers have been striving to achieve CableLabs certification under its DOCSIS family of standards, which have also set specifications for IP telephony, such as VoIP and B2B.
