FCC Reinstates Video Description Rules, Sets July 2012 Deadline for Full Compliance

The FCC has released an order implementing one of the directives of the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act's requirements by reinstating the video description requirements it adopted in 2000, which were subsequently vacated by a federal appeals court. In doing so, the Commission set a July 1,2012, deadline for full compliance, allowing some extra time beyond its previously proposed Jan. 1, 2012, deadline, but not as much time as some industry players had sought. Video description is an audio track narrating the visible aspects of television programming for the blind and visually impaired.
