Judicial Watch Questions Free Press, FCC Relationship

A conservative public interest group is claiming based on e-mails it received as part of a Freedom of Information Act request that the FCC colluded with Free Press when it crafted and ultimately approved network neutrality rules last December. Judicial Watch announced June 2 that it had uncovered "unusual coordination by some officials at the FCC and Free Press" in discussing net neutrality in the run-up to the Commission approving the rules in a 3-2 vote. It noted, for example, communications between Free Press and Commissioner Michael J. Copps and his staff about writing editorial pieces backing net neutrality rules, as well as discussing meetings on the issue.
