During a Feb. 9 hearing, Senate Indian Affairs Committee Chairman Daniel Akaka (D., Hawaii) emphasized the importance of gambling revenues to funding tribal government functions, such as education and health care, as well as in providing jobs and economic development - revenues that may be threatened by a recent Department of Justice opinion that states can sell lottery tickets to residents online, even if the information transmitted during the transaction crosses state lines as it traverses the Internet.
