Civil Right Concerns Raised Over Social Media Monitoring

Department of Homeland Security officials repeatedly told a House subcommittee during a Feb. 16 hearing that the department's monitoring of social media focuses on "what" events are being tweeted and blogged about, and not on "who" is doing the tweeting and blogging. Members of the House Homeland Security Committee's subcommittee on counterterrorism and intelligence from both sides of the aisle repeatedly expressed concern that DHS and its National Operations Center are collecting information about individuals who criticize the government online, potentially infringing on their civil liberties and chilling free speech.
