Walden Warns Against 'Heavy-Handed' Net Regs

House communications and technology subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden (R., Ore.) has suggested that FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler appears to be headed down the wrong path on open Internet rules, in light of Mr. Wheeler's remarks at International CES regarding possible reclassification of broadband Internet access services as telecommunications services under Title Ⅱ of the Communications Act. Chairman Wheeler indicated in remarks at CES that he viewed a Title Ⅱ "just and reasonable" standard for analyzing network management practices as more protective of consumers and innovators than the "commercially reasonable" standard available under a federal court decision last year overturning two of three FCC open Internet rules (see separate story). Chairman Wheeler said he planned to ask his fellow Commissioners to vote on new open Internet rules at their Feb. 26 meeting.
